Studying the Middle Ages at Utrecht University

Why choose Utrecht University?

Utrecht University offers students various possibilities for studying medieval history, literature, art, music etc., both at undergraduate (BA) and at postgraduate (MA) level. Tuition is provided by specialists in a variety of disciplines, who make valid contributions to international scholarship as researchers.

Graduate Level (MA)

I: The Two-Year "Research Master" Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance Studies (Track: Medieval Studies)
This programme is offered by the OGC, the Research Institute for History and Culture of the Faculty of Humanities of Utrecht University. The track Medieval Studies ran since September 2004 as a separate Research Master Medieval Studies. From September 2011 onwards, this "Research master’ forms part of a new "Research Master" Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, which consists of four tracks (the other three are Ancient Studies, Medieval Celtic Studies and Renaissance Studies). However, students in the Medieval Studies track will not be required to attend any courses meant specifically for students in the other tracks.

Students are selected on the basis of their scholarly merits. After having completed the programme, students will normally aim to write a PhD thesis, either at Utrecht or elsewhere.

Seminars and tutorials in the research MA are mainly taught in English; exceptionally, Dutch, German, Italian and French may also be used.

Undergraduate Level (BA)
Undergraduate courses in medieval studies are taught mainly in Dutch, except for the English department, where English is used. In some courses taught in the other language departments, the languages of these departments are used. Exchange students from abroad are welcomed, especially those in the final year of their studies. They can be accommodated individually.
